WILDLIFE CONSERVATION
|
Nature
has provided abundantly for every living thing
– be it mankind, animal or bird or trees.
To maintain the delicate life cycle, it divided
the animals into predators and prey, carnivores
and herbivores.
Each living thing is dependent
on the other. The predators depend upon
the prey for their food. The prey usually
herbivores depend upon the plants for their
survival. This chain of food cycle helps
in protecting the balance of nature. This
delicate eco- system has been time and again
disturbed by humans in different ways for
various reasons
|
|
One
way has remained through out – deforestation
– cutting of trees and destruction of
the habitat of wildlife, for constructing
houses or for cultivation. This loss of habitat
is one of the main reasons for the decline
in the numbers of wild animals. Another main
reason was game hunting by the rajas and the
British. Poachers and local villagers still
continue to kill wild animals and birds indiscriminately;
even though killing them has been banned and
this has even led to total extinction of some
animals.
In an effort to protect the wildlife, the
Indian Government started conservation efforts.
The areas where wildlife still lived were
brought under protection, wildlife sanctuaries
and National Parks were established. The
Animals which were on the brink of extinction
were protected and Projects to conserve
them were established. These Programs like
the Project Tiger and Project Elephant were
started and have been successful.

These efforts have helped to
save our natural heritage and preserve it
for generations to come. But still, the danger
has not passed as poaching still continues,
so does destruction of the forests. Illegal
Timber companies axe trees by hundreds, in
an attempt to earn fast money.
If we want to preserve
our natural heritage we must stand up against
them and do our bit towards conserving these
animals and their habitats.
