Angling and Fishing

India with its many rivers and streams provides the sport fishing enthusiast, the ideal vacation. Be it professional anglers or first timers, the Indian rivers and streams provide plenty of fishes and trouts. The location of cities near the rivers makes it possible for the fishing enthusiasts to get fishing equipment and find a good spot for fishing as well.

Except for the monsoon season, you can go and fish any time. The monsoons is the time when the fishes are breeding, so most state authorities forbid fishing during this time. Licenses are required for fishing and can be obtained from the fishery authorities. Moreover, all the fishes caught must be released back into the water. Licenses are issued for a certain stretch of water and there is a restriction for the number of fishes caught.

Except for the Himalayan Region, the weather conditions for fishing are favorable throughout India. During winters fishing in the Himalayan region is next to impossible. The best season for fishing in India is between October to November. In the Himalayan region, the best time to go fishing is from April to June.

The states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka hold some of the most interesting fresh water fishing spots in India.

JAMMU & KASHMIR
The rivers streams and lakes of Kashmir hold the most amazing population of trout, both brown and rainbow. Rightly defined as an ‘angler’s paradise’, trout fishing in Kashmir is a wonderful experience. As it is much cheaper here than in any other part of the world, the Government departments are doing their best to prevent any discriminate fishing, as it would lead to depletion of the fishes in the river.

The Indus and Lidder rivers and their tributaries along with a network of smaller rivers and streams form the best fishing spot in Kashmir. The lakes at higher altitudes can be reached by trekking and also are good fishing spots. During winters, the lakes freeze and the fishes remain at the lake bottom. Only when the ice melts do they surface.

TOURIST INFORMATION :

  • The season for fishing is from March till October.
  • The early mornings and late evenings are the best time for fishing.
  • With one permit you can catch 6 fishes.

HIMACHAL PRADESH
The rivers and streams of Himachal Pradesh abound with trout. Fishing enthusiasts with a fascination for trout throng this place as some of the biggest varieties of trout can be found here. The best spot for fishing is the Larji valley, located on the meeting point of the Rivers Larji and Tirthan. Another stream, Sainj, well known for its trout flows on the other side.

Brown Trout can be found in the streams, flowing into the River Beas in the Kullu Manali region.

UTTAR PRADESH
Uttar Pradesh is a state which has not one but many wonderful fishing sites. The Uttarkashi Himalayas holds the Dodital Lake – a fresh water lake. The lake has such an amazing trout pool, that you are guaranteed to catch one, no matter what the season.

The Corbett national Park is also a good spot for angling. The Ramganga and the Sharda Rivers in the park have a good population of the Mahsheer fish in them.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH
Arunachal Pradesh in India is another state with excellent fishing spots. The river Kameng boasts of good fishing spots like the Bhalukpong and Tipi, while the River Siang has Pashighat to boast about. Another favorite of fishing enthusiasts is “Tezu” on the River Lohit.
