kms from Kullu, stands the largest protected
Area in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Protected
by nature itself on three sides the Great
Himalayan National Park was established as
a National Park in 1984. The Jawaharlal Nehru
Great Himalayan National Park, as it is officially
named, is protected by the tall towering peaks
of the Himalayan range.
Spanning an area of 765 sq km, the National
Park is engraved from the mountainous terrain
of the Kullu District. Home to the many species
of Himalayan Wildlife, the park has a landscape
of dense forests, meadows and mountain slopes
which are dressed with snow throughout the
years.

| Animals in Great Himalayan National
Park: |
Around 30 species of mammals have been recorded in
this National Park including the animals commonly
found here. The Brown Bear, Wild Mountain Goats like
the Bharal, Goral and Serow and predators like the
Leopard inhabit these mountains. The elusive Snow
Leopard which is rarely seen also lives here.
Some of the other animals like Himalayan Black
Bear, wild sheep like the Himalayan Thar, the Langurs,
Rhesus Macaques and endangered animals like the
Musk Deer reside here in this park

| Birds in Great Himalayan National

The Great Himalayan National Park – this
beautiful stretch of hills and plains is home to
a diverse range of birds. Around 68 species of birds
have made this park their permanent residence, while
approximately 50 species come here to spend their
vacations.
Many species of pheasants like the Kaleej, Tragopan
and Monal form part of this vast population of birds

Set in the mountains of the Himalayan range, the national
park has a picturesque view. There is diversity in
terrain as well as in altitude, resulting in diversity
in vegetation. Forests of oak and Bamboo trees intertwine
with pine and deodar woods to create a dense canopy.
The alpine meadows are adorned with beautiful flowers
in the upper reaches. |

| Tourist Information On Great Himalayan
National Park: |

- The best time to visit the Great Himalayan National
Park is between April to June and from September
to October.
- The park is open for visitors from sunrise to
sunset.
- Visitors are required to obtain special permits
to enter the National Park.
- The permits can be collected from the Park Director’s
office located at Shamsi.
- It can also be obtained from the range officers
at Larji, Sairopa and Sainj.
- It is compulsory for the visitors to hire a Guide,
provided by the park authorities.
- Charges for the Guide and camera are extra.
- The only way to travel within the National Park
is by foot.
