The Dibru Saikhowa
National Park is the only National Park with wild
horses as residents. Covering an area of 650 sq km,
Dibru Saikhowa National Park is the fourth National
Park of the state of Assam. The largest National Park
in Assam, it is located 13 km away from Tinsukia town
and 515 kms from Guwahati.
Established as a National Park in 1999, the Dibru
Saikhowa National Park‘s core area was restricted
to 340 sq. km. the National park is still unexploited
by the vigours of wildlife tourism and is still
an enchantingly beautiful stretch of lush green
vegetation.
Dibru Saikhowa National Park, set in the alluvial
flood plains of the River Brahmaputra, was established
in order to protect the grass land and swamp habitat.

| Animals in Dibru SaikhowaNational
Park: |
The Dibru
Saikhowa National Park is unique for being the only
reserve to house Wild horses. The national park has
become well known for these brightly colored wild
horses which are also known as Feral Horses.
The national park is the natural habitat for endangered
animals like the Hoolock Gibbon, Slow Loris, and
Tiger, Wild water Buffaloes, Capped Langur, elephant
and wild pig. The predators of this park are the
Leopard and its cousin, the Clouded Leopard. The
deer, an essential diet of these predators can also
be found here.
The Gangetic River Dolphin and several other fishes
thrive here in the water bodies of this park.

The park’s main focus is to conserve and
protect the endangered and rare birds and animals.
The White winged wood duck, also known as Deo Hanh,
is one such bird. The park authorities are doing
their very best to conserve the white winged wood
duck in its natural habitat.
The Dibru Saikhowa National Park is an interesting
birding destination as its water bodies and grassy
pockets attracts rare grassland and swamp forest
birds. More than 250 species of birds are protected
by the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. The Jerdon's
Babbler, Rufous-vented (swamp) Prinia, the threatened
Marsh Babbler, the Black Throated Parrotbill and
the Jerdons Bushcat are some rare birds that can
be seen here.
Migrant Birds like the Black-Breasted Thrush,
the Pale-capped Pigeon and the White-tailed Rubythroat
and various Warblers also inhabit the National Park.
The Geyleg goose, Bar-headed goose, Brahmini Duck,
the Pelican and the Black Stork also come here for
their seasonal visits.
The White bellied heron and the Pallah's
fishing eagle have also seen in this park.

| Only one part
of the park is wet land while the rest of the six
parts comprise of grasslands and dense forests. The
forest cover in the Dibru Saikhowa National Park is
a wonderful combination of semi-wet evergreen forests,
tropical moist deciduous forest interspersed with
clumps of cane and patches of bamboo. Along with them
orchids of various species and rare medicinal herbs
can be found. |

- The best time to visit the Dibru Saikhowa National
Park is from November to March.
- Visitors are required to get permission before
entering the park.
- Entry to the park is from Sunrise to Sunset.
- Visitors cannot have any night halts nor can they
picnic inside the park.
- Visitors can enter the park from Guijan Ghat which
is 10 km away from Tinsukia or Saikhowa Ghat.
